Where do we go with a book like this? The back cover tells us Over 24 Million Copies Sold Worldwide and this edition 1999 so we can only suppose more have since been sold ..
It’s American in style along the lines of Chicken Soup and contains to begin pages of eulogies from top chaps at the likes of Chevron Chemical and Whirlpool Corporation with Dr Norman Vincent Peale celebrated Author of You Can If You Think You Can chipping his two cents in, a dazzling lineup of one sentence praise
Indeed the author is American
The story covers 51 pages of your well spent money with full page illustrations of a chunk of cheese, 15 in all, with a message
The early messages read “Having Cheese Makes You Happy” and “Smell The Cheese Often So You Know When It Is Getting Old” and for me the most profound is “What Would You Do If You Weren’t Afraid?”
Which of course can apply to more than cheese and you haven’t bought the book and I’ve spoilt it for you haven’t I? Bcos that was kind of it
It is a book for department meetings so coworkers can discuss what message they got from the story
It challenges workers to be aware that change happens and to embrace seeking new solutions
It suggests fear renders our sense of adventure void
It does not advise but instead presents a scenario containing four characters and leaves you to draw a conclusion
Naturally you will draw a conclusion fitting your immediate life experience and you’ll invest this with emotion, making this an ideal team building strategy
Which is why it has sold so many copies
Bosses buy it to motivate workers
It requires no analytical thinking, the reading age of a nine year old and no special understanding of anything, again why so popular
There is a website and it is also available in a slim hardback, possibly nowadays you could find it on kindle ebooks?
It’s about adapting to change
You might like it, the back cover pronounces it profound
I’m thinking it is good marketing and am wondering if each of the gospel parables were sold separately as a single volume there might be a lot of value in there ..
Anyway it claims to be a book that changes lives
Has it changed mine? I received it as a gift around 18 years ago so who can tell? It’s gathered a bit of dust in that time and I’ve reread it this week
The punchline is EMBRACE CHANGE! But the story sits with you longer, it’s kinda cute
